How to run the test
Run this before ranked. Keep the return label on the box until every channel passes. I finish in under five minutes.
Step 1: Set system volume to 50%. Match your normal gaming level. Too loud masks distortion. Too quiet hides a weak driver.
Step 2: Open the sound test. Click any Play button first. Browsers block audio until you interact with the page.
Step 3: Hit Play all. The tool cycles left, right, center, bass, surround left, surround right, then stereo. Mark each channel as working or failed.

What each channel test reveals

Surround vs stereo for gaming
Stereo is often a useful baseline for competitive play because it is simple and predictable. Whether virtual surround helps depends on the headset, software, game mix, and your preference; test both modes rather than treating one as universally better.
Virtual surround expands the soundstage for story games and battle royale flanking cues. The rear channel tones in the sound test show whether your surround processing separates front from rear.
Test stereo and any virtual-surround mode in the games you play. A mode that sounds useful in one mix may be distracting in another.
True 7.1 headsets with physical rear drivers pass the surround channel test with distinct rear tones. Virtual surround often pans rear tones slightly forward. Know which type you own before you judge a failure.
When to return a headset
Return on day one if a driver stays silent after cable swaps and port changes. Dead drivers do not fix themselves.
Return immediately: One ear silent on left, right, and stereo tests. Crackling that follows the cable when you move it.
