How to Test a Game Controller on PC (and What to Check)

This matters most when you buy a used controller, receive a replacement, or suspect stick drift is messing with your aim. A quick test before your return window closes can save you from weeks of back-and-forth with the seller.
What to test on a new or used controller
Run through this checklist before peeling the return label.

Stick drift: what it looks like and what to do
Stick drift is the most common controller problem. The analog stick reports movement when nobody is touching it. In-game, your character walks on its own or the camera slowly rotates.
In a gamepad tester, drift shows as the stick dot sitting off-center when the controller rests flat. Small offsets under 3-5% are normal and handled by in-game deadzones. Consistent drift beyond 10% usually means the potentiometer inside the stick module is worn.
Fixes, from cheapest to last resort:
- Blow compressed air around the stick base to clear dust
- Increase the in-game deadzone setting to mask small drift
- Recalibrate through the console's system settings (Xbox, PS, Switch all have this)
- Replace the stick module (requires opening the controller)
- Contact the manufacturer for warranty replacement

Trigger testing: analog vs digital
Modern controllers from Xbox and PlayStation report triggers as analog values from 0% to 100%. This matters for racing games where partial throttle is useful and for shooters with variable-speed zoom.
Some older controllers or certain driver setups report triggers as digital: fully pressed or fully released, nothing in between. If the test shows your triggers jumping from 0 to 100 with no in-between values, that is a driver or hardware limitation. Try connecting via USB instead of Bluetooth, or update the controller firmware.

Chrome has the best Gamepad API support. If a controller is not detected, try Chrome before troubleshooting further.
Connection issues: USB vs Bluetooth
USB is more reliable. It handles power and data in one cable, has lower latency, and works with every browser. Some cheap cables are charge-only and do not carry data. If a USB connection fails, swap the cable before blaming the controller.
Bluetooth adds convenience but also complexity. Pairing can drop, some controllers need re-pairing after a firmware update, and Bluetooth latency is slightly higher. For testing purposes, USB is always safer.
If neither works: check whether another device can detect the controller. This separates a browser/driver issue from a hardware failure.
When to test

- After a drop: Internal ribbon cables can come loose
- Stick drift suspicion: Verify before opening the controller or sending it in
- Before a tournament: Confirm every input registers cleanly
