Mouse test

Run this test whenever you receive a new mouse, after a drop, or when something feels off in-game. The first check is the left click: one slow press should produce one count. If a single click registers twice, document the symptom and check the seller or manufacturer’s support options.

Next, hit every button: right click, middle click, and both side buttons if the mouse has them. A failed side button can be a hardware, software, connection, or browser-mapping issue, so test it in another application before deciding the switch is faulty.

For wireless mice, run the same test on battery power and while plugged in. If behavior changes, check battery level, receiver placement, firmware, and the manufacturer’s connection guidance.

Phantom scrolling is when the page moves without intentional wheel input. In the scroll test, watch the delta counter with your hand off the mouse, then check another application and the manufacturer’s cleaning guidance. Random jumps can have more than one cause.

Inconsistent steps show up as uneven delta values for each tick. A healthy wheel produces similar numbers every time. Wild variation (40px one tick, 120px the next) points to a failing encoder or loose wheel assembly.

Missing horizontal scroll is normal on basic mice. Only tilt wheels and some trackballs send deltaX events. If your mouse has a tilt wheel and horizontal scroll never registers here, check driver software or try a different browser.
