Why it happens and how V-Sync, FreeSync, and G-Sync solve it.
Your GPU renders frames independently from your monitor's refresh cycle. When the GPU finishes a frame while the monitor is mid-scan, the display shows part of the old frame and part of the new one. The boundary between them is the tear line.
V-Sync solves this by making the GPU wait for the monitor's vertical blank interval before sending a new frame. This eliminates tearing but adds input latency equal to one frame time (16.7ms at 60Hz, 6.9ms at 144Hz). Adaptive sync technologies like FreeSync and G-Sync take a different approach: they make the monitor wait for the GPU instead, adjusting the refresh rate in real time to match the frame rate.
