Dead Keys and Ghosting: How to Diagnose Keyboard Problems
How to test a keyboard for dead switches, stuck keys, and anti-ghosting while the seller’s return period is open.
Test a new keyboard soon after delivery, while the seller’s return period is open. A full key sweep can catch a dead or double-registering key before the issue is confused with software or layout settings.
What to test on a new keyboard
Run this checklist before you install software or peel off the return label.
| Test | What to look for | Pass criteria |
|---|---|---|
| Full key sweep | Every key lights up in the test tool | 100% of keys register |
| Modifier hold | Hold Shift, Ctrl, Alt while pressing letters | Both keys register together |
| WASD + abilities | Hold W, A, S, D plus two ability keys | All five register, no ghost inputs |
| Rapid repeat | Hold a letter for 5 seconds | Steady repeat rate, no stutter |
| Stabilizer rattle | Press spacebar and Enter at corners | Clean press, no double-register |
Open the keyboard test, click the test area to focus it, and press every single key. Start with the number row, move left to right, then the function row. Any key that stays dark is dead. Mark it on paper so you don't forget which one when you file the return.
Don't skip the numpad or Print Screen. Factory defects cluster in keys people rarely touch during a quick unboxing.
Anti-ghosting vs. N-key rollover
These terms get mixed up constantly. They measure different things.
Anti-ghosting means the keyboard blocks phantom keypresses when you hold multiple keys. Cheap membrane boards ghost because they use a row-column matrix. Press three keys that share a circuit path and the board sends a fourth character you never touched.
N-key rollover (NKRO) counts how many real keys can register at once. Two common ratings:
| Rating | Simultaneous keys | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 6KRO | 6 keys | Most gaming boards, fine for FPS and MOBA |
| Full NKRO | All keys, no limit | Competitive fighting games, rhythm games |
Keyboard rollover behavior depends on the board, firmware, connection, and key combination. Use the test to check the combinations you actually press instead of assuming the printed 6KRO or NKRO label covers every scenario.
For FPS gaming, 6KRO covers you. You hold W, A, Shift, and two ability keys. That's five. Fighting games and osu! players need full NKRO because chord inputs hit 8+ keys in a single frame.
When switches fail
Dead keys and stuck keys look different in a test tool.
Dead keys never light up. The switch doesn't send a signal. Common causes include a damaged PCB trace, loose hotswap socket, or a factory defect on the switch itself. If a key continues to fail after checking the connection and layout, document it for the seller or manufacturer.
Stuck keys register constantly without being pressed. You'll see the key lit before you touch anything. Dust under the switch, a bent stem, or a failed debounce circuit causes this.
Double-registering keys fire twice on one press. This can affect sprint toggles, text entry, and other actions. Record the behavior so support can reproduce it.
Physical inspection helps. Pull the suspect keycap on hotswap boards and reseat the switch. Blow compressed air into the gap. If the key still fails in the keyboard test, return it.
Your full setup check
A bad keyboard can hide problems in your whole chain. After the key sweep, you can run a quick mouse test on the same desk setup. Sorting hardware from software issues early saves driver reinstalls.
Click speed matters less for keyboard testing. You can run a CPS test separately if you want to compare your own clicking sessions, but it is not a keyboard-quality measurement by itself.
Raw reflex speed won't save a board with a dead W key. If you compare reaction time sessions, keep the hardware, browser, and test conditions consistent because fatigue and familiarity can change the result.
Bottom line
Test every new keyboard soon after delivery. A few minutes in a keyboard test can catch dead switches, ghost inputs, double-register problems, and stuck modifiers before the seller’s return window closes. Whether 6KRO is enough depends on the combinations you use; full NKRO is not automatically better for every player.
Keep the box and purchase details until the keyboard has passed your checks and the return period has ended.
