Reaction Time for Gaming: What's Fast, What's Average, and Does It Matter?
Learn what a browser reaction-time score measures, why gaming benchmarks are hard to compare, and how to test your own result consistently.
A reaction-time test gives you one number: the delay between a visual change and your click. That number can be interesting. It is also easy to overinterpret.
The reaction time test on Mansone is best used as a personal benchmark. Take several attempts, repeat the session later, and keep your setup reasonably consistent. That tells you more than comparing one result with an internet list of supposed pro averages.
What the test measures
The test measures a visual response in a browser. It does not measure the full sequence involved in a game fight, where you may need to notice a target, identify what is happening, aim, choose a response, and click.
That difference matters. A player who predicts a peek can begin moving before the opponent appears. Crosshair placement, positioning, sound cues, and decision-making often reduce the need for a pure reflex response.
Why gaming averages are difficult to compare
Reaction-time studies do not all test the same thing. They can use different stimuli, instructions, displays, input devices, sample sizes, and ways of removing false starts. Esports studies also cover different games and player groups.
Recent research is useful for understanding the variables. A 2026 systematic review examined mental fatigue and sport-related reaction time, while a recent esports study looked at executive-function load and reaction time in esports players. Neither establishes a universal Valorant, CS2, or Apex rank threshold. The small esports comparison published by Ohio State is another example of why study design and sample size matter.
For that reason, Mansone does not assign labels such as “Radiant reaction time” or “top one percent” to a browser result. Those labels sound precise, but they are not reliable without a defined test and a representative dataset.
Display timing and input
Refresh rate changes the spacing between possible frame updates:

This is frame timing, not complete end-to-end latency and not biological reaction speed. A browser test can also be affected by the operating system, browser scheduling, mouse firmware, USB or wireless transport, and the display’s own processing.
Polling rate has a similar limitation. A 1000Hz mouse reports on an interval of about 1ms and a 4000Hz mouse about 0.25ms, but those figures do not describe the complete input path. Use the same mouse and settings when you are tracking your own score.
Can you train reaction time?
You can improve consistency, task familiarity, and the way you respond to a particular cue. The size of the improvement varies. A short warm-up may make the test feel easier, while long sessions can add fatigue and make results less useful.
For actual play, drills that combine visual response with aiming, target selection, and prediction are more relevant than clicking the same signal repeatedly. That is why crosshair placement and positioning can matter more than a small difference in a browser score.
How to test yourself properly
- Warm up with a couple of attempts, then record several more.
- Compare an average or median session result, not your single best click.
- Keep the display, browser, mouse, and polling settings consistent.
- Test at similar times when you are comparing days.
- Treat a large change as a reason to check fatigue or setup before drawing conclusions.
The useful question is not “Am I faster than a pro?” It is “Is my result stable, and does changing my setup or routine change it?”
What matters in a real fight
Raw reaction time is only one part of an engagement. A player who holds the right angle, keeps the crosshair at head height, and understands the timing of a round may need very little raw reaction after the target appears.
If your aim feels inconsistent, start with the sensitivity converter, DPI converter, and a repeatable practice routine. A stable setup gives you a better foundation than chasing an impressive-looking millisecond number.
