Limitations: Some games (CS2, Valorant) lock FOV to the aspect ratio and ignore custom values. Game-type offsets are common starting points, not fixed recommendations.
Field of view determines how much of the game world you see at once.
Every game renders its world through a virtual camera. The FOV setting controls how wide that camera's lens is. Set it too low and you're looking through a tunnel. Set it too high and everything fish-eyes at the edges.
The correct FOV is the one that matches the physical angle your monitor occupies in your vision. If your 27-inch screen at 60cm covers about 59 degrees of your visual field, setting in-game FOV to 59 means objects appear at their true size. No distortion, no artificial zoom.
Most competitive players add 5-10 degrees on top of the calculated value. The slight distortion is worth the extra peripheral awareness in fast games like Apex or Warzone.

How the FOV calculation works.
Formula: HFOV = 2 × arctan(screen_width / (2 × distance)). The physical monitor width is derived from the diagonal size and aspect ratio. This is standard trigonometry, not a game-specific approximation.
Game-type offsets: FPS competitive adds a common offset for peripheral awareness. Tactical shooters (CS2, Valorant) lock FOV by aspect ratio. Sim racing uses exact physical FOV with no offset.
