Minecraft text color formatting

How color codes work across Java and Bedrock editions.

Minecraft Java Edition 1.16 added support for 24-bit hex colors in chat and text components. Before that, players were limited to 16 named color codes (like &a for green, &c for red). Hex colors allow any RGB value, making smooth gradients possible.

Server plugins like EssentialsX, TAB, and LuckPerms adopted the MiniMessage format for applying these colors. The format wraps each character in a color tag with the interpolated hex value. The result is a smooth transition from one color to another across the text.

Common questions about Minecraft color formatting.

Select the MiniMessage format and paste the output into plugins that support it (EssentialsX, TAB, LuckPerms, ChatColor). For server MOTDs, use the MOTD format in your server.properties file. Requires Java Edition 1.16+ for hex color support.
Bedrock Edition does not support custom hex colors natively. You can only use the 16 built-in color codes. Gradient text works on Java Edition servers with plugin support.
MiniMessage is a text formatting system used by Paper and Velocity servers. It supports hex colors, gradients, hover events, and click actions. The syntax uses XML-like tags such as <color:#FF0000> for custom colors.
Only on Java Edition servers with chat formatting plugins installed. Vanilla Minecraft chat does not support hex colors or gradients. Most server networks (Hypixel, Mineplex) use custom plugins that allow formatted text.
This tool creates a two-color gradient. Each character gets its own interpolated color between the start and end colors. For more complex gradients, you can combine multiple two-color segments by generating them separately and joining the output.
