The math behind the estimate.
The formula is straightforward: divide the file size by your download speed. A 30 GB file at 100 Mbps takes 30,720 MB / 12.5 MB/s = 2,457.6 seconds, or about 41 minutes at full speed.
In practice, you rarely see 100% of your advertised speed. TCP overhead, routing hops, server capacity, Wi-Fi signal quality, and background traffic all reduce throughput. This calculator applies an 85% efficiency factor, which is conservative for most home connections.
For wired connections on uncongested networks, you might see 90-95% efficiency. On Wi-Fi during peak hours, it can drop to 60-70%. If your downloads consistently underperform, run a speed test to check your actual throughput.
