Enchanting table text
ᒷリᓵ⍑ᔑリℸ╎リ⊣ ℸᔑʖꖎᒷ
enchanting table
Runes copy as ordinary Unicode text. Going from runes to English returns lowercase letters. The letter o uses a character Bedrock Edition cannot draw.
Java commands for the enchanting font
Java Edition draws plain letters as runes when a text component sets "font":"minecraft:alt". The command uses your English text, not the Unicode runes. Bedrock Edition has no font component, so these commands do not work there.
/tellraw @p {"text":"enchanting table","font":"minecraft:alt"}Run it in chat, a command block, or a function. Newlines in your text become line breaks in the message. Format checked against the Minecraft Wiki text component and sign pages on October 10, 2026.

What the enchanting table language is
A real alphabet with a one-to-one match to English.
The enchanting table language is the Standard Galactic Alphabet. Tom Hall created it for the Commander Keen games, and Minecraft uses it for the words on enchanting table buttons. Each rune stands for one English letter, so this translator works in both directions.
The words on the table do not predict your enchantment. The Minecraft Wiki calls them purely cosmetic, with no relation to the enchantments that get applied, and they are not saved on the item. Reading them tells you nothing about what you will get.
The alphabet has no capitals. Uppercase and lowercase letters use the same glyphs, so decoding returns lowercase text. To plan what an enchantment will cost, use the Minecraft enchantment calculator.
Enchanting table language chart
Every letter and the Unicode rune this translator uses.
| Letter | Rune | Letter | Rune |
|---|---|---|---|
| a | ᔑ | n | リ |
| b | ʖ | o | 𝙹 |
| c | ᓵ | p | !¡ |
| d | ↸ | q | ᑑ |
| e | ᒷ | r | ∷ |
| f | ⎓ | s | ᓭ |
| g | ⊣ | t | ℸ |
| h | ⍑ | u | ⚍ |
| i | ╎ | v | ⊬ |
| j | ⋮ | w | ∴ |
| k | ꖌ | x | ·/ |
| l | ꖎ | y | || |
| m | ᒲ | z | ⨅ |
Example: enchant becomes ᒷリᓵ⍑ᔑリℸ. The letters p, x, and y use two characters each. These are text characters, so their shapes can differ from the glyphs the game draws on the table.
How to write it in Minecraft
Java Edition has a font for it. Bedrock Edition does not.
Java Edition
Use the enchanting font.
- Set
"font":"minecraft:alt"on a text component. - Type plain English letters in the command, for example
/tellraw @p {"text":"hello","font":"minecraft:alt"}. - Commands need cheats on in a single-player world, or operator permission on a server.
- Pasting the Unicode runes into chat also works. The game draws them in a fallback font, so the shapes differ from the table.
Bedrock Edition
No font option.
- Bedrock text components have no font field, so no command switches to the enchanting font.
- Paste the Unicode runes into chat instead.
- Bedrock cannot draw characters above U+FFFF, so the letter o shows as a box.
